eks Energy Hybrid Solution, based on AMPS and EMSystems, has enabled AES to develop an innovative project in Kauai Island (USA).
AES Distributed Energy (AES) together with the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) constructed 21 MWp solar farm with an 87 MWh BESS on 140 acres from the US Navy (Naval Facilities Engineering Command) at the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) at Barking Sands.
The project has been built using eks Energy Hybrid Solution. AMPS and control system from eks Energy allow to provide power to KIUC customers under normal conditions and enable PMRF to operate on islanded mode when normal grid power supply is interrupted.
With this project, KIUC will be able to displace 2.8 million gallons of diesel and power 6,000 homes per year. AES’ PV Peaker Plant ensure a sustainable future for the island and establish a new model for stabilizing grid-scale renewable energy. Instead of simply augmenting traditional generation, solar-plus-storage offers flexible solution for the future grid.
In 2019, the US Department of Energy rewarded to the US Navy Naval Facilities Engineering Command for this project.
